Snow Leopard Compatibility

Pagehand works with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopard adds support for text replacement in Cocoa-based applications. Pagehand already has its own text replacement system. You can continue to use Pagehand text replacement, or use Snow Leopard text replacement, or use both.

To activate Snow Leopard text replacement in Pagehand:

  • In Preferences/Replace, check the box labeled Use system-defined symbol and text replacement.

Snow Leopard changes the way your Mac works when you double-click a file. PDF files always open in Preview, regardless of the application that created them. In our view, this is a major design flaw in Snow Leopard.

Pagehand allows you to insure that double-clicking a PDF file will open it in Pagehand if it is a Pagehand PDF, or in Preview (or another application of your choosing) if it is not a Pagehand PDF. This is how double-clicking has always worked on the Mac before Snow Leopard.

To allow Pagehand to manage double-clicking on PDF files:

  • In Preferences/General, check the box labeled Manage double-clicks on PDF files.
  • In the popup list, choose the application that should open non-Pagehand PDF files.

When Pagehand manages double-clicks on PDF files, it uses a small helper application to examine the file and determine whether it is a Pagehand PDF. The full Pagehand application is launched only if the file should be opened in Pagehand.
